GFRP Manholes

22/11/2016

Before GFRP came into existence, manhole systems were traditionally manufactured from concrete, reinforced concrete, cast iron, ductile iron or PVC materials, but these materials had their own shortcomings like low load carrying efficiency and deteriorating performance due to corrosion.

GFRP manholes are part of pipe installations. GFRP pipe and plates are joined together with the use of resin-glassfibre layers. The manufacturing process assures the products to be anticorrosive, highly durable and safely serviced and maintained. GFRP manholes are gaining popularity due to its superior performance over RCC manholes.

A Smart Solution:

GFRP Manholes ensure long-term durability in every sector due thanks to its construction using thermoset material, which comprises of fiberglass-reinforced materials combined with cross-linked polyesters. With these materials, the manholes exhibit excellent resistance against wear and tear and excellent ability to sustain heavy load vehicular traffic moving over it. The fiber-reinforced plastic used in the manhole cover makes it 40% lighter and 5 times stronger compressive strength than conventional precast concrete and cast iron covers. The material is also resilient in nature, thus, sustain constant exposure to weather or sun without any compromise with the security or aesthetics.

    • CORROSION RESISTANCE: A key advantage of GFRP is the non-corrosive characteristic of the material. This helps to eliminate the need of additional lining materials and surface protection coatings.
    • LIGHT WEIGHT – SINGLE PIECE: Lightweight single piece structures make it easy to transport and install. The strength to weight ration being very high in comparison to conventional manhole covers, make it an effective replacement.
    • COST EFFECTIVE: GFRP manhole systems are cost-effective considering overall lifecycle cost.
    • DURABILITY:GFRP structures contribute to good service life. These do not require any curing. No cracking and chip out coupled with low maintenance requirements, makes longevity a benefit when used in critical applications like manhole systems.
    • AESTHETIC VALUE: Various options of decorative surface designs, color variants and logo embossing are available to choose from for high-end applications as well as aesthetically pleasing locations.

Key Applications:

  • Underground Sewerage and Storm Water Drainage Projects developed by Housing sector, Govt.
  • Inspection and maintenance of drains or sewers
  • Ventilation of drains or sewer.
  • Change of a medium(change of direction, change of pressure, change of water flow rat
  • Cleaning and flushing of drains or sewer
  • Maintenance of water meters and fittings
  • Housing of pumping stations
  • Inlet drain pits

Typical Variants / Technical Specifications:

GRP manholes and chambers can be adapted for connection with pipelines made of different materials, e.g. concrete, PE, PP, PVC, stoneware, cast iron or steel.

Depending on the type of material, connection with the manhole can be made using connector pipes made from the given material, laminated directly to the manhole or using laminated sleeves geometrically adapted to the given type of material

Key types of manholes:

1. Manholes for gravity application.

2. Cylindrical Manhole without uplift protection.

3. Integrated Tangential Manhole
